Smokin' Chicken Wings

Healthier and cheaper than takeaway makes these the perfect Friday night feast!

Who said eating real food had to be boring?! Our family loves the salty, spicy hit you get from a crispy chicken wing. They’re done in around 30 minutes while you could have some sweet potato fries on the go at the same time. Serve with a salad or have as an afternoon filler.
You can change the spices to be whatever you like, just don’t skimp on them!

This recipe is something you can do with just about any cut of chicken but that said, go to the Healthy Hacks Blog - Choosing and Cooking Chicken to see why I choose wings for this one.

You don't have to use the lemon juice, it just helps tenderise and add a little something to the flavour. If you were to do chicken wings in the oven, I would just give them a solid sprinkle of spice and away you go.

These are made all the better with my Homemade mayo (done in 2 minutes) with extra garlic if you fancy. You could even pop a little sprinkle of the Smokin' spice in the mayo....now you're talkin"!

Smokin' Hot Chicky

These are fabulous on the BBQ or done in the oven. Marinate them....or not! They are perfect as a finger lickin' Friday Feast or as part of a whole meal. They can also double as a chicken salad if you want them too!

Ingredients

  • 1kg Chicken thighs cut in half or mini wings
  • 2 teaspoons unrefined sea salt or Himalayan salt
  • 2-3 tablespoons Smokin’ Secret Spice 
  • OR
  • 2 tspns each of ground cumin, paprika, oregano, garlic powder
  • ¼ cup lemon juice (optional, but awesome!)

Instructions

  1. Combine the salt and spices
  2. Pop the chicken in a large bowl
  3. Sprinkle over the spice and add the lemon juice (if adding)
  4. Massage through all the nooks and crannies of the chicken
  5. Cover and pop in the fridge (3 hours max due to the lemon)
  6. Pop a little coconut oil or lard on a hot grill or BBQ 
  7. Cook on both sides for 8-12 minutes or until cooked through (don’t be tempted to turn too soon so a nice caramelisation has occurred - that’s the best bit!
  8. Skinnier pieces will cook faster so remove those and check the fatter ones.
  9. Once cooked, serve with a salad or veg and my super easy garlic aioli - never buy mayo again!!

Options:

If you fancy more kick, add 1/2 teaspoon of chilli powder to the mix 🌶🌶🌶
